Your thanksgiving family get-togethers could be a little more wild this year.
Meteorologist Linda Libby with Environment Canada says they are currently keeping an eye on Hurricane Matthew, which has the potential to hit the Maritimes over the long weekend.
“Hurricane Matthew developed late last week, it’s down in the southern Caribbean. As of 8am eastern this morning, it’s a category 4 hurricane. So it’s really quite intense with winds of 210 kms per hour, currently south of Jamaica and Haiti.”
Libby says there are lots of different scenarios for the track in the coming days, and she says Hurricane Matthew hasn’t been a predictable hurricane so far, “There’s lots of scenarios for the longer range. In fact, one of the things that the National Hurricane Centre down in Miami has been emphasizing is there is a large range of error for the track. Some of those scenarios are bring Matthew up into the area around the Maritimes where we could see some impact.”
She says it’s a good idea to be aware of the hurricane, and where it’s going over the next few days, especially if you plan on travelling for the Thanksgiving weekend away from home.
