It’s been a heartbreaking week for hockey families in the Maritimes with Aces player Scottie Greene still in hospital.
Greene was involved in a rollover last Wednesday on Route 3, and remains in Saint John with serious injuries.
This is also National Coaches week, and St. Stephen Mayor Allan McEachern says Aces Head Coach, Josh Hepditch, honors his title. “It just brought to my attention that what I witnessed in the last couple days for the Head Coach for the Aces, Josh, and how he’s handled himself and with his team, bringing them all together. It was amazing, how all the teamwork and mentorship was handled, it was just unbelievable.”
The McEachern’s are the billet family for Scottie Greene and he has been living with them for the past 3 1/2 weeks. Mayor McEachern says it’s been a very difficult time for the team and the family, “I don’t want to single out any coaches, it’s just really good of him going up and meeting the family in Saint John. It’s been tough for the team, for sure, and we’ve been keeping them together as a group, just to get them through this. And of course, keeping us parents together as well.”
McEachern tells us Scottie’s family from Newfoundland is by his side, and thanks everyone for their support and prayers.
In the meantime, after the Maritime Hockey League postponed three Aces games, the St. Stephen Aces are getting ready to return to the ice, with games in Nova Scotia this week.
The South Shore Lumberjacks have announced they will donate $1 from every ticket sold on Thursday’s game to help Scottie Greene’s family.
An account at Scotiabank has been set up as well for donations in St. Stephen, and over $18,000 dollars has been raised for the Greenes’ on a gofundme page.
