Two of the Senators representing New Brunswick are expressing their concern about the new appointment process for vacancies on the Supreme Court.
Pierrette Ringuette and John Wallace write regional representation lies at the heart of the Canadian Constitution, reflected in the composition of federal institutions.
They point out that since the Supreme Court has existed, Atlantic Canada has always been represented by a single seat.
The Senators add the federal government has provided no rationale that would justify abandoning the long standing constitutional convention of regional appointments.
They conclude by saying the legitimacy of the Supreme Court as a national institution would be seriously undermined without continued representation from Atlantic Canada.
