Following the shocking murder of Tanya Shand back in 2013 at the hands of her intimate partner, her friends, family and the community put together an event to keep her memory alive.
The second annual Tanya Shand Milk and Cookie Fun Run is coming up on Saturday at the qplex.
KV Regional Police Constable Kelley McIntyre became very close to the Shand family and they wanted to put an event together.
“We decided to get other families that had been involved and had been victims of domestic homicide to join along with the run,” says Cst. McIntyre. “So each kilometre of the run is dedicated to a woman in the general area that has lost her life to domestic homicide.”
The first kilometre is for Alice Leadley and the second is in memory of Melanie Davis.
“The third kilometre run is dedicated to Cindy Irving, the fourth is dedicated to Cathy Bawn and as you cross the finish line you will meet Tanya Shand’s family,” Cst. McIntyre says.
We asked how Tanya Shand’s daughter Cheyenne is doing, and McIntyre tells us she is doing really well and that they recently had a celebration of Tanya’s birthday with cupcakes and balloons.
The proceeds from the run go back into the community and are used for a variety of awareness projects including school programs aimed at creating healthy relationships.
The route is a three loop run that leaves the overflow parking lot of the qplex taking walkers and runners around Matthew’s Cove and through the trail system around the qplex.
The fun run for the kids leaves at 10am and the run for adults leaves at 11am.
