Saint John is home to the oldest continuing farmer’s market in Canada, with a charter dating back to 1785–and the City Market building recently marked its 138th birthday.
Market Manager Kevin Loughery explains it’s unique because it continues to be used for its original purpose. The Second Empire-style building is made of wooden trusses and the floor slopes with the natural grade of the land.
The tower of the Market was damaged by flood this winter. According to a source with the Market’s administration, repairs have not yet begun.
