The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is baffled why companies in New Brunswick would need to employ any foreign workers with our high unemployment rate.
One explanation is that foreign workers are more reliable.
The Federation’s Atlantic Director Kevin Lacey tells CHSJ News paying foreign workers less acts as a disincentive but another deterrant is Employment Insurance.
Lacey says another family run New Brunswick company, Millennium Marine is moving to Eastport, Maine because it couldn’t find people willing to take the jobs whereas Americans are lining up for the work. Owner Cory Guimon says he couldn’t compete with seasonal jobs that are subsidised by Employment Insurance.
The Taxpayers Federation supports recent changes to the temporary foreign workers program brought in by the Harper Government.
