The vast majority of those diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s, will die within two to five years and walks are being held to raise money to make life for those with the fatal disease as comfortable as possible.
That’s according to President of the ALS Society of New Brunswick Michele Connor who’s seen first-hand the devastating effects of ALS as her mother passed away from it a few years ago. Connor says those with ALS lose the ability to move their arms, legs and hands, aren’t able to eat and lose the ability to speak. She says they basically become prisoners in their own body.
Walk for ALS raises money for support services for those with ALS and for research into the cause, treatment and a cure. A walk is happening today in Saint John, registration is happening at noon with the actual event taking place at 1pm at the Market Square Boardwalk.
