Seniors have been warned at a town hall meeting over the weekend they’re in for the fight of their lives over the proposed new policy on nursing home fees.
The Executive-Director of the Seniors Coalition Cecile Cassista says forcing seniors to disclose their financial assets is an unreasonable intrusion into their privacy and discriminatory.
The provincial government maintains the average cost of nursing home care has risen to 233 dollars a day or 7 thousand dollars a month which the Seniors Coalition disputes. The provincial government is proposing to raise the daily rate for nursing home care from $113 up to $175.
The seniors were pressing provincial cabinet minister Dr. Ed Doherty about whether he will vote against the proposed changes. Dr. Doherty replied he couldn’t say because he doesn’t know what the final legislation will look like.
