A new program will start this September that could be a gamechanger to help young people in the south end and Waterloo Village area get an education and break the cycle of poverty.
Pathways to Education, an award winning program, is getting together with the Teen Resource Centre to provide young people from that part of the city, starting in grade 9, with one on one support which includes removing financial barriers, personalised mentoring and weekly tutoring.
Heather Doyle of the Teen Resource Centre says high school graduation rates have increased by an average of 75 per cent with this program. 73 per cent of the students who take it and graduate from high school go on to post secondary education or training. She calls these results phenomenal.
The federal government is providing Pathways to Education with 34.5 million dollars over four years for all 18 of their programs, including the one here in Saint John.
