Meters may now be mandatory in all cabs in Saint John with the new bylaw having taken effect, but that doesn’t mean all companies will be necessarily using them when it comes to actually charging their customers.
President of the Saint John Taxi Owners and Operators Association and cab driver with Vet’s, Don Wilband, tells us that they and Carleton Cab are going to charge the lowest of the two rates — whether that’s the zone fare or the meter fare.
“The reason is because, it’s survival,” says Wilband. “We realize that Saint John, again, with the customer base 99-percent of them being low income or working poor, they just can’t afford metered cabs.
Wilband says he thinks other cab companies are starting to follow suit as of Thursday.
He also points out that they have always been against the meters.
