While recent university grads face difficulties finding a good first job, a new report suggests the problem is getting worse.
The Parliamentary Budget Officer released a report showing as many as 40% of grads aged 25-34 are overqualified for their current jobs.
This is a 4% increase over the last 5 years.
In 2014, 582,000 people were overqualified for their current role.
The PBO work confirmed results from an earlier Statistics Canada report showing the fields with the worst overqualification problems were the humanities, business management and public administration; and finally social and behavioural sciences and law.
College grads are doing a little better, noting a 3% decline in the overqualification rate since 2006, and a 5% increase in the number of recent college grads who held jobs that matched their qualifications – bringing that total to 50%.
