Organ and tissue transplants save thousands of Canadians every year, but unfortunately, it’s not something you hear about very often.
The Canadian Transplant Association’s New Brunswick Branch is hoping to change that with this year’s Transplant Trot and Flag Raising events held during National Organ & Tissue Donation Awareness Week.
Regional Director for Atlantic Canada Kristen Wheaton says 4500 people across the country can be waiting for an organ donation at any given time and sometimes each year up to 250 of those people die waiting.
In New Brunswick, 42 percent of people have registered yes to being a donor, 34 percent registered no and 24 percent is unknown.
Wheaton would like to see an opt-out program implemented.
She says most people she talks to agree with organ and tissue donation, but they never get around to signing their Medicare to become a donor.
