Outgoing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Prime Minister Designate Justin Trudeau sitting beside one another for the sombre ceremony in Ottawa to mark the anniversary of Corporal Nathan Cirillo being shot and killed at the National War Memorial. Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent who was run down by a car a couple of days before the Parliament Hill attack was also honoured.
Governor-General David Johnston praised the courage and professionalism of those who responded that day along with the resilience of the country in the aftermath.
The Governor-General told the gathering Corporal Cirillo stood up for our values of tolerance, equality, diversity and fairness which is who we are as a people.
A 21 gun salute was fired from the lawns of Parliament Hill.
