Community and business leader Richard Currie, a native Saint Johnner, will be given the 2015 Humanitarian Award for New Brunswick by the Red Cross and child rights advocate Kyla LaPointe will be recognised with the 2015 Young Humanitarian Award tonight.
Currie has been honoured with the Order of Canada and was Chancellor of U-N-B from 2003 to 2013 where he also endowed more than 40 scholarships and remains Chancellor Emeritus.
He’s also been a significant contributor to the medical school in Saint John, construction of the new YMCA on Churchill Boulevard and restoration of the century-old bandstand in King’s Square.
LaPointe’s personal experiences in foster care motivated the Bathurst native to champion child rights. She played a key role in founding the New Brunswick Youth in Care Network.
