Four-and-a-half years in prison for a St. Stephen man arrested after trying to flee police.
Kody John Hiltz was one of two people arrested following the incident in Charlotte County.
RCMP attempted to stop a stolen vehicle on Route 1 in Oak Bay around 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 10.
“As police approached, the driver of the vehicle performed a U-turn, and started driving into the oncoming traffic,” police said in a news release at the time.
Officers laid a tire deflation device, but the vehicle continued at a low rate of speed. It eventually stopped several kilometres away on Loop Road in Upper Mills.
Police said they seized several items from the vehicle, including a loaded weapon, a prohibited weapon and hard-plate body armour.
Hiltz, who was the driver of the vehicle, appeared in court later that day and was charged with the following:
- Resisting arrest
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Careless use of a firearm
- Unauthorized possession of firearm
- Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
- Weapons possession contrary to an order and failure to surrender authorization
- Failure to comply with a probation order
- Driving motor vehicle while being prohibited
- Flight from police
Police said Hiltz returned to court on Thursday and was sentenced to prison time, minus time served. He is also prohibited from possessing weapons for life and from driving for three years upon his release.
