New Brunswick has lost another one of its iconic covered bridges.
The William Mitton Covered Bridge near Riverview has been demolished.
Provincial officials said demolition work began on Tuesday and is expected to be done by the end of the week.
Jacob MacDonald, a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, said the bridge had become “severely degraded” in recent years.
“Though the bridge has been monitored and clearly marked with closure signage by DTI, the removal of the now dilapidated structure will help ensure the safety of the public and the environment going forward,” MacDonald said in an email to our newsroom.
The bridge was moved to its current site in 1942 and has been closed since the early 1980s when it was bypassed with the realignment of Route 112, according to MacDonald.
New Brunswick once had more than 340 covered bridges — a number that now stands at fewer than 60.
