Mounties have arrested a Sussex youth for allegedly operating an all-terrain vehicle in a dangerous manner.
RCMP responded to a reckless driving complaint involving an ATV in a Leonard Drive parking lot around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.
“Police quickly arrived on scene and activated their emergency equipment; however, the driver fled the area in a dangerous manner,” Mounties said in a news release on Thursday.
The driver and the ATV were found stuck in a snow bank nearby a short time later. No injuries were reported.
A 17-year-old was arrested at the scene and later released with a court date. The youth was also issued a ticket for not having a valid registration, and the ATV was towed.
Under the New Brunswick Off-Road Vehicle Act, all off-road vehicles are prohibited from travelling on a public road, shoulder of the road or within 7.5 metres of a public roadway unless it is an approved trail.
Some municipalities have bylaws allowing ATVs on specified roadways. In Sussex, the length of Main Street is considered an approved trail.
Sgt. Kevin Glode of the Sussex RCMP said it is important to follow the rules and to familiarize yourself with your municipality’s bylaws before riding on a public roadway.
