Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings and special weather statements across New Brunswick, with significant snow expected to begin Thursday morning.
“Definitely expecting a rather messy system to move into southern areas of the province,” Meteorologist Jill Maepea says.
It will initially start out as snow on Thursday morning, but we are going to see a change over to some ice pellets and freezing rain in the afternoon before it all ends by Thursday evening.”
As for snowfall amounts, she says the further south you go, the less snow you will see.
Areas along the Bay of Fundy will see around 10 centimetres while the Moncton region could get 10 to 15 centimetres. To the north, up to 25 centimetres of snow is possible.
Areas to the north and central regions are currently under snowfall warnings, whereas other regions are under special weather statements, including:
- Sussex, Kennebecasis Valley and Kings County
- Saint John and County
- St. Stephen and northern Charlotte County
- Grand Manan and coastal Charlotte County
- Moncton and southeast New Brunswick
- Fundy National Park
“The messiest conditions are in the afternoon, especially for the afternoon commute home. We are expecting a mix of different precipitation types at that point, so road conditions won’t exactly be the greatest for the afternoon. We will see that snow starting around 8 a.m. and even a little bit later in the Moncton area,” Maepea adds.
On Friday, Maepea says strong winds will continue with gusts 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, or even 80 kilometres in exposed areas in the south.
The weather agency is also monitoring another weather system for Sunday, which could bring more winter weather to the region.
