Mounties say they no longer believe there is a risk to the public after issuing an emergency alert for two armed individuals.
The alert, issued through the national Alert Ready system, went out across the province around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.
RCMP said the suspects were reported to be carrying a firearm “with dangerous intent” in Berry Mills, near Moncton.
One of the suspects was identified as a 50-year-old man while police did not name the second person.
In an update around 2 p.m. Thursday, RCMP said the person named in the alert is no longer considered a suspect. No update was provided about the second person.
“The incident is believed to be targeted and public safety is not at risk,” said an updated emergency alert.
Investigators continue to search for a black Dodge Ram 2500 & a light-coloured Ford F150 in connection with their investigation.
Schools in hold and secure
Several schools in the Anglophone East School District were placed in hold and secure due to the police operation.
- Evergreen Park School
- Northrup Frye School
- Maplehurst Middle School
- Magnetic Hill School
- Salisbury Elementary School
- Salisbury Regional School
- Havelock School
- Petitcodiac Regional School
“Hold and Secure means movement inside the school is as usual, but nobody is permitted to enter or exit while it is in place,” Stephanie Patterson, a spokesperson for district, told our newsroom in an email.
Patterson added the superintendent enacted the hold-and-secure “out of care and caution” and the RCMP did not tell them to.
