Talks between the two sides in the Canada Post strike have been put on hold.
Minister of Labour Steven MacKinnon says they were temporarily suspended by the federal mediator because the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post remain too far apart on critical issues to be successful.
The hope is the pause will allow the parties to reassess their positions and return to the bargaining table.
MacKinnon has also called a meeting with both parties for Wednesday afternoon.
The two sides had been working with a federal mediator since November 18th.
Postal workers walked off the job on November 14.
Canada Post is reporting losses of more than $3 billion since 2018.
The special federal mediator has decided to temporarily suspend mediation between Canada Post and CUPW. After several intensive days of negotiation, his assessment is that parties remain too far apart on critical issues for mediation to be successful at this time.
