The death of a 19-year-old Walmart employee in Halifax is not suspicious.
Halifax Regional Police provided an update on the investigation into the death of Gursimran Kaur on Monday and later released a video statement on their investigation.
It comes nearly a month after her remains were discovered by her mother inside the bakery’s walk-in oven at the Mumford Road Supercentre on October 19.
Constable Martin Cromwell explained in a video posted on social media that investigators conducted several interviews and watched surveillance video as part of their work.
“We do not believe anyone else was involved in the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death,” said Cromwell. “There are questions that may never have answers.”
Our newsroom has reached out to the Maritime Sikh Society for comment on these developments.
“The police investigation determined the death is not suspicious and there is no evidence of foul play,” said Halifax Regional Police in a release.
Police investigators say they have met with family to share this update and extend condolences.
“The family asks the public to respect their privacy and the dignity and memory of their loved one, as they receive this news,” stated HRP.
Store undergoing renovations
Walmart spokesperson Amanda Moss tells our newsroom that renovations inside the store have resumed, and the company has not determined a timeline for their completion.
“The store has been undergoing renovations for several months as part of our standard remodel program. Out of respect, we paused construction immediately after this tragic event. While the store remains closed, we will resume work on these previously-planned renovations,” explained Moss. “At this time, we don’t have a confirmed timeline for completion. Our store remains closed until further notice.”
Earlier this month, our newsroom first reported the commercial oven Kaur was found inside, was being removed and plans to do so were made even prior to her death.
Labour still investigating
The Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration is assuming the lead in the ongoing investigation.
“This remains an active investigation, and the department is unable to provide further details at this time,” read an email from the department to our newsroom. “Workplace investigations are complex and take time.”
A stop work order on the oven and bakery area was lifted on October 28. This was after the oven was assessed and determined to have been operating as per the manufacturer’s requirements.
“The Department extends its sympathies to the family and friends of the employee during this incredibly difficult time.”
