A Maine man who was at the centre of a manhunt in northeastern New Brunswick following a fatal shooting has been arrested.
RCMP said the 47-year-old was taken into custody at around 2:35 p.m. Friday. Police did not provide any other details.
The man was wanted in connection with a shooting in Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation, northeast of Miramichi, on Thursday.
The first call came in just before 2 p.m. regarding help for a man suffering from a gunshot wound.
When police arrived, they discovered the body of a 48-year-old man along with an injured man.
He was taken to hospital for treatment and was dealing with what police believe are “non-life-threatening” injuries.
An emergency alert was issued two hours later, asking residents in the area to remain inside and others to stay away.
The emergency alert message, known as Alert Ready, was ended earlier Friday afternoon, despite the search for the suspect continuing at that time.
“Based on the progression of the investigation, police believe this to be an isolated incident,” RCMP said in a release.
The accused remains in custody and will appear in court at a later date. No details have been released about possible charges.
