Work to replace a popular boat ramp in Saint John’s north end begins this week.
The Millidge Avenue boat ramp will be closed starting Monday until around Sept. 13.
Officials said the existing asphalt ramp will be replaced with a concrete ramp, including floating docks and an aluminum pedestrian gangway.
The $569,000 project will also involve replacing the asphalt runway that goes onto the ramp.
City officials said the new boat ramp will be safer and more accessible for users.
“The textured concrete will reduce the risk of slips and falls, further enhancing safety,” said a news release from the city.
“The floating docks and aluminum gangway will significantly improve the ease of use for operators, ensuring a safer and more efficient means of loading and unloading boats.”
In May, council voted to enter into an agreement with the Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club to maintain the new boat ramp.
They will be responsible for seasonal maintenance of the boat ramp, including the floating docks and pedestrian gangway.
As part of the agreement, they will store the two floating dock sections and pedestrian gangway each winter and be responsible for disassembling and reassembling them.
“The City currently does not have the capacity, or the expertise required to effectively maintain the to-be-constructed boat ramp,” said a city staff report to council.
“This proposed agreement leverages a relationship with a local not-for-profit organization with plenty of resources and expertise to effectively maintain the new boat ramp.”
