The lone remaining financial institution in Grand Bay-Westfield will be closing its doors for good.
Scotiabank has confirmed to our newsroom that its branch in the community will close on Oct. 1.
A spokesperson said the decision comes amid changing “customer preferences” and more day-to-day banking being done digitally.
“We are continuing to evolve how we serve our customers and invest in areas that make it easier for our customers to bank with us from wherever they are,” Natalie Yuen, manager of Canadian Banking Communications, said in an email.
“We are committed to supporting our customers, employees and communities through this transition.”
The mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield said they are disappointed with the financial institution’s decision to close.
Brittany Merrifield said Scotiabank is the only bank that provides in-person services in the community.
“We are concerned about the impacts this closure will have for the entire community, including seniors and local business owners, many of whom conduct banking services in-person,” Merrifield said in a statement.
The next closest Scotiabank branch is on Saint John’s west side, about a 15-minute drive away from the Grand Bay-Westfield location.
