It has been a challenging few months for New Brunswick food banks, according to Food Depot Alimentaire.
The non-profit serves food banks, community kitchens, school programs and other agencies across the province.
FDA’s executive director said food banks are seeing fewer donations than usual, while usage was up nearly 50 per cent last year.
Stephane Sirois said he would like to see more New Brunswickers lend a helping hand if they can.
“Plan a food drive at your work or in your neighbourhood and keep bringing food to your food bank, go there and volunteer,” Sirois said in an interview.
Sirois said some food banks in the province are entirely volunteer-run, and they are beginning to burn out due to the increased demand.
The executive director said he hopes increased demand will level off in 2024 but thinks it might keep rising over the coming months.
“I don’t anticipate it’s going to go down any time soon. We have to be ready to support everyone,” said Sirois.
