Sophia Recovery Centre kicked off its much-anticipated renovation project in Saint John on Friday with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The centre was first opened in a Hazen Street apartment in 2008 by Sisters Arleen Brawley and Mary-Beth McCurdy of the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception (SCIC).
The centre provides women in the community who are struggling with drug and alcohol addictions with counselling, and activities such as art, yoga, meditation, and book clubs.
Since then, the recovery centre has also opened locations in the communities of Rothesay and St. Stephen.
However, the age and condition of the centre’s original space have created ongoing issues. It was forced to close temporarily in March after frozen pipes burst and caused flooding.
In June, the centre announced that it had secured a 3,600-square-foot space at 238 Metcalf Street.
Once renovations are complete, the property will further support women on their journey of addiction recovery.
“It all starts with a dream, a need, and a willingness to risk, and that’s what the Sisters of Charity always do, and we’re still risking,” said McCurdy.
“The quote is ‘build it and they will come.’ Well, dream it first and pray it.”
The new recovery centre is scheduled to open its doors in April. More details can be found by clicking here.
