Two dozen people are temporarily displaced after a fire broke out in a 12-unit apartment building in Rothesay.
Shawn White, deputy chief of the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department, said they were called to a building on Rockhaven Place around 8 a.m. Friday.
White said the first crews on the scene found heavy smoke coming from a top-floor apartment.
“There were still residents in the building so we had to make sure we got the residents out and extinguish the fire at the same time,” Whtie said in an interview.
“The apartment that did have the fire in it was heavily damaged. Crews also had to go to the roof to cut holes for ventilation, so there’s some damage to the roof as well.”
White said the Canadian Red Cross responded to the scene to help the 25 residents living in the building.
The deputy fire chief said he is hopeful most of the residents can return home within the next day or two.
“Once the apartment company is able to repair the roof and some of the damage that was done to that apartment, and once the power is turned back on, we’re hoping that the other residents are able to return to their homes,” said White.
No one was injured in the fire and White said all pets living in the building are also safe.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this point.
The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department received mutual aid support from Hampton Fire Rescue. Ambulance New Brunswick and the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force were also on the scene.
