Nearly 300 combat engineers are taking part in a large training exercise at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown.
Exercise NIHILO SAPPER is a 10-day exercise meant to validate the readiness of 4 Engineer Support Regiment for deployed operations.
It includes bridge construction and deconstruction, obstacle establishment and removal, as well as a raft crossing of the Saint John River.
“Exercise NIHILO SAPPER provides the members of 4 Engineer Support Regiment a great opportunity to build and sustain the readiness of multiple engineer capabilities,” Lt.-Col. Adam Poirier, commanding officer of 4 Engineer Support Regiment, said in a news release.
“These are capabilities that we can deploy abroad and to support Canadians here at home on domestic operations.”
Engineers are responsible for providing mobility, survivability, and general engineering support during an emergency in Canada or on international missions.
The exercise began on Wednesday and is scheduled to continue through next Friday.
