The redeveloped public space in and around Fundy Quay in Saint John has an updated name.
It will be called Ihtoli-maqahamok, which means “The Gathering Space” in Wolastoqey.
Saint John council unanimously adopted the new name during their regular meeting Monday.
Coun. David Hickey chairs the civic commemoration committee, which recommended the name.
“This committee felt we could do something in an effort of reconciliation and in an effort to offer a name that, we feel, suits the site and suits the history of the site,” Hickey said during the meeting.
The name was selected through public engagement, research, staff support, and consultation with Wolastoqey Nation New Brunswick.
According to a city staff report, the public space has had many names over the years, including Market Slip, the Boardwalk, and Loyalist Plaza.
The area was the centre for the commercial marine business from the time it was built in 1788 until the 1960s. It was then partially filled in for a parking lot until the development of Market Square in 1983.
“It has been a point of destination for newcomers, visitors, and industry and has played a significant role in community building,” said a staff report.
Now, the space is being reimagined to include a skating rink, indoor and outdoor patios, a new stage, a space for craft and food vendors, and access to the waterfront.
“It’s a place for the community to really come together, recognize what Saint John is, recognize what our community is all about,” said Hickey.
City staff said a communications plan has been put together to help people become familiar with Ihtoli-maqahamok, which is pronounced ee-doe-lee MAH-qwah-HA-muck.
