More than two dozen racialized people in New Brunswick are receiving support through a new program.
The Skills for Success program is being implemented by Black Lives Matter New Brunswick (BLM NB).
It is designed to help racialized individuals in preparing to earn a career in the skilled trades.
Matthew Martin, executive director of BLM NB, said this is a critical program for those taking part.
“This program will provide life-changing opportunities to its participants and will remove the barriers that they face on an individual level, and provide them with the skills, knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in a skilled trade and work toward their Red Seal Certification,” said Martin.
The program focuses on nine main skills needed to participate, adapt, and thrive in learning, work, and life.
That includes foundational skills like writing, reading and numeracy, and socio-emotional skills, such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, adaptability, creativity, and innovation
Over the weekend, the federal government announced $1.5 million to help BLM NB put on the program.
It is expected the funding will help 30 racialized individuals living in New Brunswick, including women, African Canadians, newcomers and other racialized populations.
