Seven people will be inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame this year.
Officials with the provincial hall of fame announced the 2023 induction class on Tuesday.
It includes “individuals who have excelled as athletes and coaches, representing the province in various competitions,” said a news release.
Saint John-born harness racing driver and trainer Gilles Barrieau has won more than 5,000 races as a driver and 1,234 races as a trainer.
Barrieau has total purse winnings of more than $13.7 million throughout his career, said the release.
Miramichi native John Cann represented New Brunswick in baseball at the Canada Games and played four seasons at Canada’s National Baseball Institute.
He played for Team Canada in 1992-1995, winning a bronze medal in 1993 and the Baseball Canada award for sportsmanship, leadership, and ability in 1993.
Bob Cockburn of Fredericton coached the UNB Ironmen rugby program for 31 years, from 1968 through
1999.
His teams won 15 Maritime university titles, three Caledonia Cup Maritime senior rugby championships, and seven McNair Cup titles as New Brunswick Rugby Union champions.
John Crocker of St. Stephen, who is being recognized posthumously, was a prominent figure in Canadian and international sports.
Born in 1870, Crocker was the national director of the YMCA, manager of the first Canadian Olympic team, and secretary of the Canadian Olympic Committee from 1922 through 1947.
Track and field runner Peter Richardson from Fredericton set 10 national records in the 1970s, mostly in long-distance running events.
He won multiple national titles in the 5,000m and 10,000m events and competed in international competitions, such as the Commonwealth Games and the World Cross Country Championships.
Bob Stanton, a highly decorated softball umpire from Fredericton, has umpired in over 40 provincial championships, 15 Eastern Canadian tournaments, and eight Canadian Championships.
Saint John’s Marlene Vaughan was a talented multi-sport athlete with over 70 years of competitive experience.
She excelled in six sports, winning 63 championships at provincial, regional, and national levels.
This year’s inductees will be celebrated during an event in Miramichi on June 10.
