Scaffolding attached to the Smithtown Covered Bridge buckled and fell into the Hammond River.
Staff with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure are aware of the collapsed scaffolding on the bridge over the Hammond River near Route 860.
The supplier and installer of the scaffolding have been contacted to assess the situation and remove it.
On Thursday afternoon, officials from DTI were on-site dealing with the situation.
Damascus Road was open to traffic in both directions.
The Hammond River’s water levels were very high following Wednesday night’s heavy rain.
Trees and other debris fell into the river and became caught on the scaffolding.
