The Canadian Hurricane Centre is keeping a close eye on tropical storm Nicole in the northwestern Bahamas.
A tropical cyclone information statement has been issued for all three Maritime provinces ahead of potential impacts this weekend.
Current projections have the centre of the tropical system making landfall in eastern Florida early Thursday.
It is then expected to turn northward travelling over land while merging with a cold front and becoming post-tropical.
“Since the storm is expected to transition to ‘post-tropical’ well to our south, it will essentially be an autumn-type storm while impacting Eastern Canada,” said the information statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.
On its current track, the centre of the storm is expected to go through New Brunswick, according to forecasters.
Heavy rain is forecast to move into the region Friday night and continue throughout the day Saturday. Eastern areas of mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton could see lingering showers or rain on Saturday night as the system pulls away.
Tropical temperatures and gusty winds are expected to the south of the track, with cold northeasterly winds to the north of it.
“Parts of central and eastern Quebec and eventually Newfoundland could even see some snow,” said the statement.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre expects to provide another update at some point on Wednesday.
