Banners will showcase 100 Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) veterans and service members from New Brunswick.
During an announcement on Wednesday at M. Gerald Teed School in Saint John, the Turnbull (NB) Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society revealed two banners that will be publicly displayed across the province.
The four-foot banners will feature graphics printed on vinyl, a background of aircraft silhouettes, and an image of the veteran, including their name, rank, and dates they served in the RCAF.
“They will be displayed across the province, and then the families will be given the option, ‘would you like it?'” said Herald Wright, director of the Turnbull (NB) Chapter of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society.
Banners that go unclaimed will be given to various aviation groups, societies and public places, he said.
Wright brought up that the banners will represent a diverse range of service from 1917 to 2024.
“Regardless of where they are in New Brunswick, male, female, ethnicity, everyone will be treated equally, and regardless of rank, whether you are a leading aircraftman, or you’re a lieutenant-governor,” he said.
The banners will be printed over the winter of 2023-24 and made public in April 2024.
They are designed by Jim Belliveau, a retired RCAF graphic designer with the 410 (City of Saint John) Squadron at Cold Lake.
Veterans can be nominated by sending information by mail to the banner committee.
Information the committee will need includes name and rank, date and place of birth and death (if applicable), dates served, a summary of the RCAF career, a 5×7″ photographic print, and full contact details.
