A mix-up is creating confusion for tens of thousands of voters across New Brunswick.
Elections New Brunswick has sent letters to households ahead of the upcoming local government elections in November.
However, some have received a letter mistakenly indicating they are not having an election, while others not having an election may get the opposite message.
According to Elections NB, the issue was caused by a mix-up in the name on files sent to the vendor who printed the content and packaged the envelopes.
“The mistake, introduced after the files were sent to the supplier, was not caught by us during the proofing process,” said chief electoral officer, Kim Poffenroth.
More than 260,000 households have been sent the wrong election message, according to a news release from Elections NB.
Poffenroth said voters who live in areas having an election will be sent voter information cards in mid-November indicating when and where they can vote.
There will be no election in 18 communities as they were not impacted by the municipal reform or the number of voters in the local government increased by less than 15 per cent.
Those communities include Belledune, Campobello Island, Dieppe, Fredericton, Fredericton Junction, Grand Manan, McAdam, Memramcook, Miramichi, Moncton, Neguac, New Maryland, Quispamsis, Riverview, Rothesay, Saint John, Tracy, and Upper Miramichi.
Residents in the rest of the province, including those living in unincorporated rural areas, will have some form of election.
