Saint John’s Waste Wise program begins the week of October 23.
On Monday, Common Council unanimously approved the first and second reading of updates that are required for the Solid Waste Bylaw.
“Changes include the permissible containers, collection limits, the bag tags, and the new solid waste collection schedules,” said Michael Hugenholtz, commissioner of public works and transportation.
The Waste Wise program includes curbside collection of garbage, recycling, and composting.
Each household will receive green and blue recycling bins. The green bin is for plastics, tin cans, aluminum, and milk cartons. The blue bin is for paper, boxboard, and cardboard.
City staff will also deliver to most households a garbage cart that will work with the “helping hand” technology.
“Some of the carts and [bins] are being delivered in these days, and those delivers include some information for residents about the new program,” added Hugenholtz.
An urban bag tag system will be used for residents in special collection areas, and for those who receive weekly service.
Any extra garbage outside of the limit will require a $2 bag tag.
Final approval for the Solid Waste Bylaw will go back to Common Council at a later date.
