The Campobello Island ferry has been extended once again due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions at United States border crossings.
In a news release Thursday, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said the province will continue to subsidize the service “on a month-to-month basis.”
“The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure understands the importance of extending Campobello Island ferry services temporarily, and on an as-needed basis,” Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Jill Green said in the release. “This enables Campobello residents to move freely, to and from the island, without added restriction.”
The ferry typically runs from June through September, but has been operating continuously since June 2020 due to restrictions on border travel.
Campobello Island’s permanent transportation link, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge, is connected to the mainland at Lubec, Maine.
That means a round trip to New Brunswick or other parts of Canada requires crossing the border four times.
Since January, the U.S. has required non-residents entering via land ports of entry and ferry terminals to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID.
Green previously told our newsroom that the ferry service costs the government about $60,000 a month.
The ferry will operate four days per week, weather permitting.
