The Canada Games Aquatic Centre has been chosen by the City of Saint John as the pilot facility for its solar panel program.
It is the city’s first solar panel initiative and is estimated to generate eight kilowatts of electricity for the facility.
A total of 13 panels are being installed at a cost of $47,000, according to a news from the centre.
“The installation is covered completely through the City of Saint John, and they’re also receiving funding for a good portion of the cost, and that’s being covered through the Low Carbon Economy Fund (LCEF), which is a fund that is administered through the federal government,” said Amy McLennan, general manager of the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.
McLennan hopes the solar panels will reduce the centre’s energy costs.
“With the increasing costs that we’re seeing in energy consumption as is the world over, we’re hoping that the installation of the solar panels will assist in mitigating those cost increases,” said McLennan.
“Also, ultimately we hope it will result in savings. We will be monitoring our energy costs closely, following installation to see what benefits are provided.”
The solar panels are part of the city’s Climate Change Action Plan, which was approved by Common Council in May 2019.
McLennan said they anticipate it will take a few weeks for the solar panels to be fully installed.
