Last week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford made a trip to the Maritimes.
During his time out east, he met with the premiers of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
One of the topics the four premiers discussed was health care.
When asked about privatization within New Brunswick, Premier Blaine Higgs mentioned, “all options are on the table to understand what are the best practices not only in our country but other countries.”
During an interview regarding health care, and nurse shortages within the province, Paula Doucet, the president of the New Brunswick nurses union mentioned introducing private health care would be a terrible idea.
“Fundamentally, as a New Brunswicker, and as a Canadian, I think that’s terrible that we would put a patient’s financial status above their health care needs.”
“That’s not the Canada that Tommy Douglas envisioned when he implemented and fought for medicare in the 60s, and I think it’s our job to make medicare more robust and invest into our public system,” continued Doucet.
Meantime, on Friday, New Brunswick’s Health Minister Bruce Fitch hinted that announcements are coming soon to try to improve health care.
It comes after Horizon Health recently announced that 1,300 health care workers have been hired in the last five months.
