A trio of Saint John women will be recognized by the Rotary Club of Saint John for giving back to their communities.
Roxanne Fairweather, Monica Chaperlin, and Lisa Keenan will be awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship Award at the club’s annual Annual Gala and Awards Reception, taking place at the Delta Marriot Saint John hotel on Oct. 20.
“Roxanne Fairweather, Monica Chaperlin and Lisa Keenan are true examples of giving back for the betterment of society, and we are looking forward to recognizing and celebrating their contributions
to our community,” said Jay Kimball, president of the Rotary Club of Saint John.
Fairweather’s passion for education led her to serve on the board of governors at the University of New Brunswick, as well as forge a partnership with Innovatia and the Elementary Literacy Friends (ELF) program to increase literacy by providing volunteer tutors to Grade 2 students.
Chaperlin is the coordinator of the Business Community Anti-Poverty Initiative (BCAPI) since 1997. The organization of business leaders collaborates with community and government organizations to break the cycle of poverty for Saint John kids and their families.
As chair of the Board of Directors for Port Saint John, Keenan has been involved in several nonprofit organizations, including the Canadian Red Cross, the Saint John Non-Profit Housing board and the former Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary.
The Paul Harris Fellowship Award, named after a Chicago lawyer who founded Rotary in 1905, is one of the highest honours Rotary can bestow upon a person for their outstanding contribution to the community.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20, with a dinner to follow at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $150 per person or $1,000 for a table of eight. The club said all money raised supports the Teen Resource Centre’s Pathways to Education. The program provides breakfast and lunches for young people in need at area schools.
