The public portion of the Fundy Quay project will no longer include a pedway.
Saint John council voted this week to remove the pedway connection from Market Square to the Fundy Quay development from the plans.
Jeff Cyr, director of strategic projects for Envision Saint John, provided a presentation to Common Council on Monday night.
The presentation outlined seawall construction continues and is on schedule soil remediation and site regrading are well underway.
Demolition tenders for Loyalist Plaza and the Market Square Boardwalk have been awarded and work is set to begin.
In terms of the pedway, Cyr said one reason for the removal was significant budget challenges due to the price of steel.
“As well, timing, as the Fundy Quay schedule began to get clarified it was clear it was misaligned with the timing of our federal funding budget and timeline, more so as originally expected.”
“As well as design and aesthetics, as we manage the design the aesthetics of the pedway became something that would have really would have undermined the quality and intentions we had for this public space,” continued Cyr.
With the removal of the pedway, Cyr said Envision Saint John is prepared to submit a request for a change to Infrastructure Canada through the province’s regional development corporation, which is helping to fund the overall project.
