There are no roundabouts for Saint John motorists to go through, but that could change with the city’s MoveSJ plan.
The transportation plan has three phases, and introducing modern roundabouts for certain intersections is part of the third and final phase.
During Common Council on Monday, Tim O’Reilly, director of transportation, said there are five intersections being considered
- Ashburn Road/ Rothesay Road
- Manawagonish Road/ Gault Road
- Sandy Point Road/ Foster Thurston Road
- Millidge Avenue/ Somerset Street
- Simms Corner
O’Reilly clarified how a roundabout would benefit the Simms Corner area.
“First of all, it would allow direct access to Fairville Boulevard, which would significantly decrease traffic and trucks on Harding Street West. Second, Fairville Boulevard and Bridge Road don’t line up very well at all, and using a roundabout at this location would accommodate the fact that those streets don’t line up,” he said.
O’Reilly also outlined benefits from installing roundabouts in Saint John.
He added roundabouts have the ability to reduce T-bone collisions, help motorists reduce speeds, and provide safer crosswalks.
Council will receive presentations on the remaining portions of MoveSJ’s third phase before being asked to endorse it.
