Bylaw enforcement officers in Saint John now play a bigger role when an overnight on-street parking ban is issued.
There are two bans that the city issues – one for the north, east and west areas, the other for the south/central peninsula.
When a ban is in place, any vehicle left on the street is subject to being towed.
During Common Council on Monday, councillors approved a motion to amend who has the authorization to allow a tow truck to hitch onto a vehicle.
Prior to the unanimous vote, Saint John police officers were only allowed to authorize the towing of a vehicle, but now the onus is on bylaw enforcement officers.
City staff have said this will help ensure better street plowing outcomes while allowing police officers to focus on more pressing priorities on their part.
