A family-owned Québec pizza chain is expanding to New Brunswick and opening a franchise in Quispamsis.
Pizza Salvatoré is scheduled to open its first New Brunswick location at 184 Hampton Road in mid-March.
The family-owned restaurant chain is now run by the third generation.
“My grandfather opened the first pizzeria in 1964 in Quebec, and then his children took over the business and they grew the original pizzeria to 13 locations, then the third generation, my three brothers, my sister, and I bought the company in September 2018, and expanded the number of locations to 40,” said Élisabeth Abbatiello, co-owner and vice president of communications.
During a recent interview, Abbatiello explained why they decided to establish a franchise in New Brunswick.
“We know the province quite well as we often travelled to it for summer holidays, as well, my father was happy and proud to show where he lived and played hockey in his early adult life in New Brunswick, so now we are working to expand to several cities in the province, and the Quispamsis location was the first lease that was signed,” she said.
Guillaume Abbatiello played in the American Hockey League for the Fredericton Express in the 1980s.
Abbatiello said a franchise will be open in Miramichi this summer, and conversations are underway with landlords in Saint John and Moncton.
The business model is company-operated, meaning the stores are corporately owned.
“But, we offer profit sharing with restaurant managers with a 50/50 split with the company. This is why I think it’s easy for us to recruit good managers, and typically this business model isn’t used in the fast-food industry,” said Abbatiello.
The Quispamsis location requires 50 team members, said Abbatiello.
“Every time we open a restaurant we need 50 employees to run the location, so our main goal is to start to recruit the base,” she said.
New Brunswickers already have several pizza options, however, Abbatiello and her siblings are quite confident in the restaurant’s offerings.
“But also, and mainly in our team members, of course, we have delicious pizza and awesome poutines, but the main difference between Pizza Salvatoré and our competitors is that we don’t even look at them because our main focus is only on our customers,” she said.
Abbatiello added that since April 2021, Pizza Salvatoré has opened a new restaurant every 14 days.
