The Canadian Red Cross is looking for New Brunswickers to shine a light into the lives of older adults who may be living alone without a support network.
A new pilot program called Connection NB is being established in Saint John, Saint Andrews, Moncton and Miramichi where volunteers connect seniors to services and organizations who can help them living at home safely.
Wanda Wilson is the coordinator for the Saint John program. She has connected with over 200 available services in the Saint John area which include seniors centres hosting coffee chats and game nights.
“There is a service called Elder Dog that will come to your house and help you walk your dog if you have mobility issues,” Wilson said.
Wilson said some people may misunderstand the commitment adding they are not asking anyone to be a personal support worker.
“It is called Connection NB for a reason. You are more of a concierge, doing the legwork and providing moral support,” Wilson said.
Wilson understands people might be a bit reluctant and tired right now with the whole COVID thing going on but volunteers can make a big difference through this program.
“It’s a big bang for your volunteer buck. You are looking at six hours a month with a commitment of six months. You have a huge impact on the community with just that little bit of effort,” Wilson said.
The Red Cross is actively recruiting now for volunteers for Connection NB.
