Four more New Brunswickers who had COVID-19 have died, according to the latest figures from the province on Wednesday.
Public Health said the latest deaths include a person in their 70s from the Moncton region, a person in their 60s from the Fredericton area, and two people from the Edmundston zone — one in their 70s and one 90 and over.
The total number of COVID-related deaths in the province since the pandemic began now stands at 196.
Health officials said a record high of 123 people are in the hospital with COVID-19, with 11 patients requiring intensive care, and six of them on a ventilator.
Four of those in the hospital are under the age of 20, while 67 were admitted for reasons other than COVID-19.
Currently, 342 healthcare workers across the province are in isolation after testing positive for the virus.
However, after calling on volunteers, officials said in less than 24 hours, more than 1,600 New Brunswickers have responded to the call and want to support the province’s pandemic response effort.
“We are encouraged to see so many New Brunswickers step up and answer our call in one day,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard in the release.
“Please pass along the word to neighbours, family members, and friends to see if they can also give us a helping hand in this fight against the Omicron variant,” continued Shephard.
Based on PCR testing, there are 498 new cases with 4,296 known active cases across the province.
That includes 1,485 active cases in the Moncton region and 1,006 active cases in the Saint John.
There have also been 805 new positive rapid test results reported through the province’s online portal.
The rate of new PCR cases is 63.8 per 100,000 for the fully vaccinated, 33.8 per 100,000 for the partially vaccinated, and 81.7 per 100,000 for the unvaccinated.
Of those currently in hospital, the rate is 14.5 per 100,000 for the fully vaccinated, 13.5 per 100,000 for the partially vaccinated, and 25.1 per 100,000 for the unvaccinated.
