The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) is gearing up for its inaugural season in April.
The first game is scheduled for April 21 in Saint John between the Port City Fog and the Moncton Mystics.
“We’re super excited, but also a little nervous … but we want to get things rolling and have a great season,” said Jillian Wilton, franchise owner of the Port City Fog.
During a recent interview, Wilton said the team name and logo pay tribute to Saint John.
“We had a lot of options on the table, but celebrating the fog is what the city is known for, some people think it’s a negative, but we are bringing it in as a positive,” said Wilton.
The team and association are looking to inspire the community through outreach.
“We want young girls seeing these ladies compete, and recognizing ‘that can be me someday,’ if you see her, you can be her, the visibility that this is going to bring for our young female athletes, given the opportunity to see professional basketball being played I think will have a huge impact on our community,” added Wilton.
The team is organizing a super fan club, where they will offer special seating for games, season tickets, and a long-sleeve shirt.
Wilton adds regular admission will be capped at $5.
MWBA will consist of six teams — three in New Brunswick and three in Nova Scotia — and will run a 12-game regular-season schedule.
Other teams in the association include the Fredericton Freeze, Halifax Hornets, Halifax Thunder, and Windsor Edge.
