Conservative incumbent John Williamson has been re-elected in the riding of New Brunswick Southwest.
As of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, Williamson had 17,523 votes (49.8 per cent) with 99 per cent of polls reporting.
His closest competitor, Liberal candidate Jason Hickey, had 8,346 votes (23.7 per cent).
Williamson mentioned he would continue to stand up for the people of New Brunswick-Southwest as there are several issues that still need to be addressed.
“One for example is better rural internet, infrastructure always ranks high, and there’s a lot of concerns from small businesses about recovery, the need to ensure we move from COVID-relief to paycheque, and of course there are still challenges in the fisheries as well.”
Williamson added a conservative government is better attuned to the views and the needs of rural Canada, “and my pledge to voters is to keep working hard, keep working hard on local issues, and to represent people loudly in federal parliament.”
NDP candidate Richard Warren has 4,753 votes (13.5 per cent), People’s Party candidate Meryl Sarty has 3,015 votes (8.6 per cent), and Green Party candidate John Reist has 1,529 votes (4.3 per cent).
While most of the ballots are expected to be counted Monday night, some of the mail-in ballots will not be counted until Tuesday.
