Brunswick Square in uptown Saint John is the place to be this month for book lovers.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John is holding its 16th annual Big Book Sale in the uptown shopping centre.
Laurie Collins, executive director of the local chapter, said COVID-19 protocols will remain to keep everyone safe.
“We’re still enforcing the wearing of masks in the store and the hand sanitizing. We encourage people to try to keep enough distance between themselves,” said Collins.
The book sale, which is normally a week-long event, will once again take place throughout the month of August.
The change was implemented during the height of the pandemic last year to keep crowd sizes smaller.
“The month-long sale is obviously a little bit different for us than what we’re used to … but spacing it out over a month, it’s exciting,” said Collins. “We’re seeing lots of turnover of books already.”
The book sale is located on Level 1 of Brunswick Square at the former home of Lil’ Shop of Science. It will also offer online purchases of “grab bags” of books, which can be ordered online with all forms of payment accepted.
Collins estimates that residents have donated tens of thousands of books for this year’s sale.
“People are so generous in and around the city of donating their books, and such good quality too,” she said. “A lot of people will give us their books they bought last year, so they’ll return them and they get resold.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters hopes to raise $20,000 during the book sale, which is their second-largest fundraiser of the year behind Bowl for Kids Sake.
The book sale will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Aug. 31. You can also drop by on two Saturdays, Aug. 14 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
