For the first time since March 2020, passenger rail service will soon be operating in the Maritimes.
VIA Rail has announced The Ocean will gradually resume service with one weekly round trip.
The first train starting in Halifax will depart on August 11, while the first trip beginning in Montreal will happen on August 15.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had an important impact on the travel options of Canadians in Eastern Canada,” said Cynthia Garneau, president and Chief Executive Officer, in a news release issued by VIA Rail.
Service will presumably look much different, with the Crown corporation saying “strict protocols of sanitary measures” will be in place.
The measures will include enhanced cleaning, air ventilation system upgrades, and modified onboard services.
The Ocean offers Sleeper Plus and Economy Class cars for the 1,346-kilometre journey that includes stops in Moncton, Truro, and Miramichi.
A gradual return is expected to continue until October 1, when the situation can be reassessed.
“While full inventory remains available on these trains after October 1, 2021, as we approach the date, we will update customers as it becomes clear what service will actually be possible based on the evolution of the pandemic.”
